The Revolution was not Televised

To paraphrase Gil-Scott Heron, "CCCP changed it's name, and the revolution will not be televised."

I note that the CCCP blog site now identifies itself as "Community Cycling Club of Portland." Of more import was Tracey's reply to the lone commuter that we encountered on Sunday's ride. We were at a group standstill at the ominous crosswords of Ross Road, and the road running from Old Orchard to the Cascades. The commuting rider wanted to know what CCCP stood for. Tracey offered "Community Cycling Club of Portland." No one objected, no one spoke up for the old competitive canard. Tracey spoke, no cameras were present, the old CCCP is no more; the new Community Cycling Club of Portland emerges from its ashes. I propose a granite memorial at that very corner commemorating the untelivised revolution- Tracey emerges as the new Lenin, and we all watch our backsides.

OUCH! It seemed in conversations with Kris, that CCCP was changing it's name. I simply wanted our group to sound a bit friendlier to a possible newcomer instead of throwing out that harsh word "Competitive". I didn't hear any one correct me as I looked around for affirmation as the words came out of my mouth. As a relative newbie to the club myself, I had no idea what this moment meant - this "Revolution"! My apologies to those of you veterans and founders of this wonderful club! I can only ask that you still welcome me and hopefully we can all embrace our new name - assuming it comes to be!

PS, Russ, do you have an original membership card that we can attach to you when we stuff and hang you in Forest Gardens after your demise?

I like this moment becoming the symbolic birth for the new club. The members have spoken with their votes, all done very scientifically of course, so we are also now officially the Community Cycling Club of Portland. Lenin is still rolling in his grave. I don't think $3000 carbon fibre bicyles for the proletariat was his vision of revolution, though Community is certainly closer than Competitive.
