Most of you probably saw the email from Kris regarding a proposed new CCCP logo, designed by Robert Oliver.
We'd really like people to weigh in with their thoughts about it. Please make a comment here on the blog (then everyone can see the comment). If you'd prefer, you can send Kris or me an email with your comments.
Options with the new logo (Kris is also advocating for some beer glasses):
Thanks to Robert for his efforts!! Don't forget to comment!

First of all - this logo is a huge leap from the old one - Kudos to Robert!!
I have to say that the logo is very crisp, polished and almost old school - fantastic. Additionally, I love the use of the chainrings - both of them.
The one thing that sticks in my mind though - is if you look at it from a distance - I see a horseshoe - that's the only thing that is bothering me. And let me point out to those of you who don't know - getting the chrome highlights on the chain is no small feat (the attention to detail on the whole thing is superb) - and I will say the Robert pulled it off flawlessly.
Nicely done my man!
I noticed the horse-shoe effect as well. Perhaps the chain could be extended for a complete circle?
Just a suggestion.

What if, remove the star, and complete the circle? Just a preliminary thought. Otherwise very good, and we are all riding with a very talented graphic artist. Russ
I like your thinking Russ. I was going to suggest removing the star, too, but perhaps Robert had it there for some significance. Robert?

I actually love the star... my favorite thing about the name of this club is the fact that its initials are CCCP, maybe its my socialist leanings, and the star is an important piece in any Soviet propaganda (IE: http://spaliuke.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/soviet_propaganda.jpg)
I am anti-horseshoe so perhaps complete the chain circle and put the star behind the CCCP in the middle? Or maybe place the start directly above the CCCP and make it smaller so it fits below the completed chain? Or we can complete the chain with a star... so just add a few more links?
Otherwise, this is awesome!! I want beer glasses and water bottles myself! And armwarmers with the name of the club in Russian... :-p
Oh, and I love the work that the club does and the people in it... but mostly the CCCP part. :-)
Thanks for the comments on the logo.
Although I had not seen the horseshoe shape while designing things, it is a sign of good luck! :) Consider it a subliminal way of wishing us all good luck on our rides!
The chainlinks are meant to look similar to a laurel leaf, which is why they are open at the top. Keeping the links open and keeping the star is more visually interesting than adding another circular element to the logo.
The star itself is mainly a design element which ties into the Soviet/Russian theme. Smaller red stars are used to seperate the curved type in the logo as well.
Symbolisms. Gotta love 'em!

Lots of responses from my CCCP newsletter to Rob's design proposal.Wanted to pass them on to everybody by posting them on the blog.

Hey everyone,
I saw the new logo, and I think it's a great improvement! I like the simplified version as the looping lines may be hard to get to look good on silk-screened on bike jerseys, and I don't think the black lines are too critical. I wish the full name was more readable, although I don't think it needs to be dominant. Just maybe a different font? Something bolder and simpler?
However, I'm worried about getting it printed on shirts & jerseys, especially silk-screened screened (like the cotton tees). Will there be a version of the logo that is more simple and uses less gradations? Usually the dye-sublimation process of the bike jerseys handles gradations well, but not silk screening (or embroidering, should we ever go there).
Overall, great work. Glad to see someone take on this project. And in case anyone is wondering, I will not be offended if the web site gets redesigned. It certainly has room for improvement.

Chris,
Awesome logo design!

That logo looks exactly like the crescent and star symbol of Islam, rotated 90 degrees. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and I expect it's not intentional, but that's exactly what it looks like. Is that what we want? I'm sure I'm not the only one who will notice.

Dan,
That's a great observation.
Initial reaction: TOTALLY WICKED! Nice work, really!
Then I read some responses, and kinda see the points, so if the horseshoe/crescent thing is a hangup, and the subtle loops would be hard to print, could the chain links go around the main image, and the star be emphasized a little? I see how that might crowd the image a bit, tho... just a thought. I REALLY REALLY like where you're heading with this, so please don't get discouraged!
Koool new design!!!
Agree with much of what has been already noted. A few additional semi random thoughts from left field- Lucky upwards horseshoe was questionable at first glance, but after a second look, it gets a thumbs up; agree with the outer lettering being to small, how about keeping the Community Cycling Club of Portland (small stars between words) and having Pedal to the People , printed normal in a straight line (or in blocks) at the base as a foundation; central star is great; in keeping with the greening of CCCP can it change colors

Wow, very cool. I love the use of the chain & rings. My eye was first drawn to the logo with the circular text around the outside but I think I like the water bottle logo best as the circular text has a tendency to take away from the sprocket teeth so I would put it as my second choice. Third would be the logo accompanied by the BBB logo.
Thanks for putting it together,
Paul
